Semester-wise syllabus for an M.Tech in Petroleum Engineering

 

Semester 1: Core Foundations 

Courses:

1. Advanced Reservoir Engineering 

   - Reservoir rock and fluid properties, Darcy’s law, material balance equations, and reservoir simulation basics. 

2. Drilling Engineering 

   - Well design, drilling fluids, casing design, blowout prevention (BOP), and directional drilling. 

3. Formation Evaluation

   - Well logging (gamma ray, resistivity, neutron-density), core analysis, and petrophysical interpretation. 

4. Petroleum Geology 

   - Sedimentary basins, hydrocarbon traps, source rock characterization, and seismic interpretation. 

5. Research Methodology 

   - Technical writing, statistical tools (Python/MATLAB), and data analysis for reservoir modeling. 

Labs/Workshops:

- Reservoir Simulation Lab (PETREL, Eclipse) 

- Drilling Fluids Lab (rheology, mud testing) 

 

Semester 2: Advanced Topics & Electives 

Core Courses: 

1. Production Engineering 

   - Nodal analysis, artificial lift systems (ESP, gas lift), and flow assurance (wax, hydrate mitigation). 

2. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) 

   - Thermal, chemical, and gas injection methods, and EOR screening criteria. 

 

Electives (Examples): 

- Offshore Drilling and Production (subsea systems, floating platforms) 

- Unconventional Resources (shale gas, tight oil, coalbed methane) 

- Petroleum Economics and Risk Analysis 

- Natural Gas Engineering (LNG, gas processing, pipelines) 

- Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) in Oil & Gas

- Production Optimization Lab (PROSPER, PIPESIM) 

- EOR Simulation Lab (CMG, Eclipse EOR modules) 

 

Semester 3: Specialization & Project Work

- Reservoir Simulation and Modeling (history matching, uncertainty analysis) 

- Hydraulic Fracturing Design (frac fluid chemistry, proppant selection) 

- Digital Oilfield Technologies (IoT, AI/ML for reservoir management) 

- Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) 

- Petroleum Data Analytics (machine learning for production forecasting) 

Project/Dissertation: 

- Phase 1: Topic selection (e.g., optimizing hydraulic fracturing in shale, AI-driven reservoir modeling), literature review, and proposal. 

- Seminars: Presentations on trends like energy transition, digital twins, or sustainable petroleum practices. 

 

Semester 4: Thesis/Project Completion 

Thesis/Project: 

- Full-time focus on simulations (reservoir/economic modeling), field studies, or experimental work (e.g., core flooding for EOR). 

- Final documentation, viva voce defense, and collaboration with industry (e.g., ONGC, Schlumberger, Halliburton). 

Additional Components:

- Industrial Internship (optional, with oil majors, service companies, or consultancies). 

- Workshops: Training in PETREL Advanced, WellTest (Kappa), or CCUS technologies.
