M.Tech in Structural Dynamics: Semester-wise Syllabus

 

Semester 1: Core Fundamentals 

1. Advanced Mathematics for Engineers 

   - Matrix algebra, differential equations, partial differential equations, numerical methods. 

2. Structural Dynamics Fundamentals 

   - Single and Multi-Degree of Freedom (SDOF/MDOF) systems, free and forced vibrations, modal analysis. 

3. Finite Element Methods (FEM) 

   - Static/dynamic analysis, eigenvalue problems, applications in structural dynamics. 

4. Mechanical Vibrations

   - Damping mechanisms, resonance, vibration measurement techniques. 

5. Lab 1: Computational Tools 

   - MATLAB/Simulink for simulations, ANSYS/ABAQUS for FEM, introductory projects.

 

Semester 2: Advanced Topics & Applications 

1. Advanced Structural Dynamics 

   - Nonlinear systems, random vibrations, transient response, wave propagation. 

2. Earthquake Engineering 

   - Seismic analysis, response spectra, code compliance (IS, ASCE), retrofit techniques. 

3. Vibration Control Systems 

   - Passive/active/semi-active control, tuned mass dampers, smart materials. 

4. Elective 1 (e.g., Wind Engineering or Composite Materials) 

5. Lab 2: Experimental & Applied Analysis 

   - Shake-table experiments, ETABS/SAP2000 for seismic design, sensor data acquisition.

 

Semester 3: Specialization & Project Work 

1. Elective 2 (e.g., Structural Health Monitoring or Offshore Structures) 

2. Elective 3 (e.g., Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction or Smart Structures) 

3. Probabilistic Structural Dynamics 

   - Reliability analysis, risk assessment, stochastic modeling. 

4. Project Work Part 1 

   - Literature review, proposal development, initial simulations/experiments. 

5. Professional Seminars/Workshops 

   - Industry trends, research methodologies, software training (e.g., Python/OpenSees).

 

Semester 4: Thesis/Dissertation 

- Independent Research Thesis 

  - Full-time research on a specialized topic (e.g., seismic retrofitting, AI in dynamics). 

  - Submission of dissertation and viva voce defense.
